Nick Bentham Photography

I have recently been working on a site for Nick Bentham, Photographer. The site was cutting edge but unfortunately due to the current situations..... the project did not go ahead.

The site would be full screen resizeable and to navigate through images.... the user would drag the images left and right, would would reveal the next full screen image. This site was supposed to give the user a taster of his work, which would be updated every other day.

The test can be viewed at www.golpys.co.uk/nhrb/fullscreendrag/impact/gallery.swf

Nicholas Bentham - Photographer

I approached the very talented Nicholas Bentham regarding his current site and after a few polite emails, the project has started to re-design his online portfolio site. here is my first attempt.

the initial concept is intended to be full screen images with a clean typographical box situated in the bottom left corner of the window at all times. this site is supposed to stick in people's minds, and give them a taster of what nick does...... so what's different? the answer is..... the way people view the images, instead of just clicking next and previous, the user will drag the images right or left to scroll to the next image, and at full screen - this looks bloody amazing! i'm getting very excited.

i'll keep you all posted.

grenache restaurant

grenache is a new decadent dining restaurant located in walkden, just outside of manchester. the new site has been uploaded iand is now live for all to view. the idea of having something different from every other restaurant in the area and extra elements in the site that added extra value to the users experience: for instance, the menu is rollover, so when it is hiding - more of the imagery can be viewed. when the user rolls over the navigate section - the menu pops out and when the user rolls over each category - customers quotes appear, bit of friendly added value. the other extra element in the site is that the images can be hidden or viewed, the main intention is to utilize the wonderful image we produced. www.grenacherestaurant.co.uk

Sir Golpys

I received a phone call today from Lawrence Giles, Head of the Tech Media Course at Salford University asking if I would be interested in taking up a role at the University for the Advanced Tech Media course. The role would involve creative direction, tutoring, marking papers, assessing concepts and ideas, and generally helping students with any problems they have.

I am flattered by the offer as I think this role would suit me down to the ground, its also a bonus that it doesn't harm my freelance work as I will only be in University 1 day a week.

So yeah, let's see what happens.

Bespoke invitations are becoming ever more popular as more requests have been made for various occasions.... mainly 18th and 21st birthday parties. By having a professional, bespoke and personal invitation gives the occasion a real feel good factor when handing out invitations to their guests.

A company re-brand is also on the agenda accompanied by stationary, promotional flyers, and a new website.

This enables viewers to clearly understand what it is I do, I will also be pushing the promotions of my invitation designs as it could be a little earner for myself on the side of working on the big projects. edit Magazine Cover Images

OK.... so I had photoshoots throughout the day and here are some teaser's for y'all. For a few different reasons I decided on the subject / model to be a University tutor - which links into the whole inspiration aspect of the magazine. But for future issues, the front cover would or could be portrait photography of any contributor to the magazine.

So many thanks to Alan Heighton and Tash Willcocks for being great sports and beautiful models. I have just randomly picked a shot of each model, and the debate of the final images will begin on Thursday 24th.

Sunday 20 April 2008

edit Magazine Cover

Photoshoots will be taking place throughout the day of Monday 21st April to create a full bleed front / back cover for my magazine. Its exciting times..... let's hope all goes well....

miniBreaks

As an extra project at University - all students were given the chance to re-brand the company, miniBreaks. Students were to come up with initial ideas which would then be reviewed by the big guys at miniBreaks.....And they chose me! wahaay! I now have a meeting with the Managing Director and the other big boys this coming Monday. A great opportunity to re-brand an already big company that is growing very quickly.

Have a look at their current existing brand....

Friday 21 March 2008

edit magazine logo

OK so after deciding my new magazine is going to be called edit, I have developed ideas and come up with this logo. The concept is relating web to print, as this magazine will be doing. Therefore the bitmap font has been used, and don't worry....it's not going to be bitmap fonts throughout the magazine! The square has been created from the grid system I am using in the magazine and the extended line throughout the edit logotype will continue through the back page of the magazine. This line represents a minus sign to link in with the edit theme - edit magazine will be a magazine where creatives submit work and the work submitted will be edited down to make a magazine.

Visual Arts Course

Myself and fellow student Tom Myers are to create a hybrid catalogue for the Visual Arts course at Salford University. A brief at Uni undertaken by graphic design third years was to create a catalogue for the Visual Arts end of year show. My pitch was successful aswell with Toms, so now we are creating a hybrid catalogue.

Tom's front cover imagery will be used in my catalogue format and layout along with the website designs I created. As I will work on the catalogue and web design, Tom will be producing an invitation to the show, and promotional posters.

A open brief at university to visually represent "relationship". I decided to create a fun brief around the relationship between human form and typographic form. Code School

If you want to work for a digital design agency outside of the London, Code Computerlove is definitey the place to be! They win awards left right and centre for creating digital answers. Code Computerlove is full of design geeks, which is a good thing as I class myself as one. (A design geek is somebody who has immense passion for design and gives 100% commitment).

Over the last few years, Code has won a total of 39 industry awards. So far in 2008, Code has been voted North West Digital Agency of the Year - The Drum and Eighth in Revolution Magazine's Top 10 Ranking UK Digital Agencies, as voted for by clients (joint first for ROI). Code's client list includes HMV, Waterstone's, Kimberly Clark Corporation, PZ Cussons, Crown, Lex, Epson, First Transpennine Express, Premier Foods, NUS and Hillary's.

Anyway....to the point. Code School is a program in it's first year to find the best young talent around. After various interviews I got selected with three other students to gain experience from the Code School, which ultimately helps our development as designers. Other various benefits come from Code School, such as individual mentors, studio experience, trips to design lectures. I am very privileged to be be part of this and very proud of myself for getting this far.

Cinema 4D

A personal project to learn the basics of Cinema 4D, an understanding of both 2D and 3D design would be benefitial to any designer in my opinion. Commisioned by SpaRitual to design a contemporary and professional brochure. Grid structure, type hierarchy, composition and layout were all significant factors. Spot UV elements were used on particular parts of the catalogue which add to the viewers experience.

Arcadia

A private event around christmas time 2007 promoted The Thrills and Burtons Menswear. Along with a few fellow students we were asked to produce a short video from the secret event at Ruby Lounge, Manchester.

A big day in the cup

Today we (Manchester United) play Arsenal in the fixed FA Cup 5th Round. This game is absoutely massive in it's own right, but after the happenings of last weekend, even more pressured is added on United.

50 years after the Busby Babes, it just so happened that the closest game to February 6th would be against Manchester City. The boys didn't turn up and it probably was the worst performance I have ever seen, and as I have been a season ticket holder at Old Trafford since I was 5, that is a big statement. I really don't understand how our players didn't get motivation from the Busby Babes. Not one of our players give 100% and it was disgraceful! The occasion was overwhelming and although I hate to say it....credit must be given to the City fans inside the stadium on that day as they reserved themselves from disrupting the emotional occasion.

So after last weekend's very negative performance, the boys have a chance to bounce back.....against Arsenal, which should automatically motivate our players. With Rooney and Evra back and with Arsenal's injury worries, a victory is on the cards.
